Texture sensitivities

Do any yarns textures give you sensitivities horribly bad? For instance, most of the patterns on here are with the bulky super soft yarn, but that type of yarn feels so weird on my fingers like it is sucking any hydration out. It almost feels like a microfiber cloth but nowhere near as bad thankfully so I can still use it. Do you have any alternate suggestions for the super soft bulky yarn that is still nice? Am I alone in these yarn texture sensitivities

Yes red heart is so scratchy. I have gotten used to some of theirs but I still have my moments where I want to throw a skein and just run my hands on my pants to rub it off.

I had to change my hooks and now I won’t use any other hooks anymore. It’s like my hooks and yarn have formed the appropriate relationship and they know how to behave and keep quiet. I switched to bamboo for a certain project because I didn’t have that size in my preferred brand and the squeaks were unreal.

I don’t have much experience with many yarns outside of craft store purchases. I do know I hate REALLY cheap acrylic or polyester or whatever it is that’s kind of stiff and scratchy. I also dislike some with a strip of other material running through it, like a shiny plastic or metallic thread.

I haven’t looked into or worked with natural animal fibers. I know past experience with wool blankets and jackets that it could potentially be very triggering. I recently backed a natural fiber project on Kickstarter, so I will soon learn how I feel about things like yak and camel.

I won’t do the yarn that feels like a scrub daddy/mommy sponge, and no Sherpa because I don’t know how but to me it makes fabric and yarn mange to make static feel sticky, and wool is hard for me most of the time (primarily because good wool is expensive and I understand why it is, I’m just a broke girl) even part wool I struggle with because it feels so scratchy to me that finishing the project constantly running the scratchy yarn through my finger is so overwhelming especially when amped up by my autistic sensory issues

Bulky yarn irritates me - texture wise and allergy wise (it makes me itchy).

I’ve tested patterns on here that say to use bulky yarn and I’ve acrylic yarn and it’s still cute.

The really cheap scratchy yarn is what everyone starts with and they all ask me to teach them to crochet. I politely set theirs aside and get mine to teach and tell them they can use theirs at home if they wish.

I have cut my old cheap yarn. And used it for stuffing before.

Good to know.

I’m not sure how it would be with sensitivity issues, but I’ve used this wool yarn before which is super chunky and soft:

Technically you can make any pattern with thinner yarn, it’ll just come out smaller than the original. You could also try using two strands together of a medium weight yarn that you like.

Thanks. It looks really soft. I have some wool, but it has some other fiber running through it that is a harder texture. I was going to make my son a scally cap, but halfway through I pulled it and just bought him one. It was worth the money to just buy the hat the other yarn was so ick.

I told him I would find another hat with smaller yarn and find the color he wanted that I could stand and try again. He wanted it in a cream color. I finally found this in size 4 using a 5.5mm hook. Looks much more tolerable. It asks for Peruvian wool but I think as long as he likes it and I can tolerate it , whatever it is will be fine.

I am going to explore the yarn you sent. Thanks again.

It also comes in a weight 4 version if that helps:

Have you tried cotton yarn before? It feels better on my hands than synthetic fibres, so maybe it would be good for sensory issues.

I have the most trouble with eco friendly polyester and acrylic yarns too, I think it’s more to do with what they use to make it eco friendly that bothers me allergy wise, I had a recent issue with a cape my mum made me for a costume from a blanket we go at Ross, zero problems with the second cape made out of polyester just like the other but a different brand, it was so sad cause I really wanted to wear them both and my mum worked extra hard on the one that makes me itchy :sob:
